EDM Machine- Its History and the Process Involved.

EDM stands for Electrical discharge machining.

In 1770, a scientist named Joseph Preistly was conducting an experiment which led to the observation that electrical discharges had removed material from the electrodes he was using in that particular experiment. He called it electro-discharge erosion.

During the 20th century in 1940’s the foundation for EDM was developed. This was developed by two Soviet scientists, the lazarenkos.

EDM (Electric Discharge Machining)

EDM has a simple process. A workpiece and an electrode are taken. An electrical spark is between these two. The spark confirms the flow of electricity. The temperature is raised to 8000 to 12000 degrees Celsius which produces intense heat. The spark produces is controlled to the surface of the material only. It doesn’t melt the metal. Ionized water is used in the experiment. The spark produced in the dielectric of ionized water. The water present in the experiment works as a coolant. It also flushes away the eroded particles of the metal.

There are different types EDM Machines

Drill EDM

Wire EDM

RAM EDM

Edm machines are growing and have their space in the technological field along with milling and grinding equipment. It can machine complex shapes even in very hard metals. It is mainly used in machining dies, tools, and molds. EDM machine works fine whether the metal is hardened steel, high-speed steel or tungsten carbide.
